About Jon McLaughlin

Jon is a native of Washington, and began studying piano at age eight. He went on to study music theory, history, and orchestration at Whitman College. While at Whitman, he began studying jazz in earnest after studying jazz appreciation from musicologist and author Bill Cole. He continued his music studies at Evergreen State College, where he helped prepare a published learning guide titled "Modulation Manual."

After leaving Evergreen, Jon spent ten years as a professional performer in numerous jazz and rock bands. In 1981, he started teaching piano, and discovered his passion. He has written student workbooks on jazz improvisation and music theory, and has taught workshops in jazz for all instruments. His current work in progress is a group of online self-paced lessons, quizzes and games in music theory and notation. In 2002, he released a solo piano album, which received critical acclaim (Cadence Magazine).
